5 Sounds Your AC Shouldn’t Make

woman-listening

We’ve all been spending a lot of extra time in our homes lately. For some of us, that has resulted in feeling the urge to overhaul a lot of the interior decor, now that we are getting a chance to REALLY look at it. For others, it means picking up old hobbies again. Still, for some of us, it means we have become acutely more aware of some of the things going on it our home, like the strange sounds coming from our air conditioners.

Were those sounds always there? Or are they a sign that something is wrong? If you are finding yourself asking questions like these, our team help. We have provided a helpful list of sounds your AC unit shouldn’t make so you know when to reach out to us for air conditioning repair in Lavonia, GA.

5 Noises Your Air Conditioner Isn’t Supposed to Make

While you are spending more time at home these days, you don’t want your air conditioner to give out and leaving you in a home that is suddenly stifling. Keep your ears alert for these noises and reach out for professional repairs if you hear one or more of them.

  1. Hissing: Don’t mistake a hissing noise for the sound of air passing through your system. These are not the same! A hissing noise can indicate something somewhat small like an overly clogged air filter or it can indicate a bigger issue such as a refrigerant leak.
  2. Buzzing: When you turn on your air conditioning system, do you hear a consistent buzzing or humming sound? It probably makes you a little worried and it should. This noise is often an indicator of electrical trouble in your AC unit
  3. Rattling: If you hear the sound of something rattling around inside of your AC system, reach out for professional service as soon as you can. Rattling is usually caused by loose parts vibrating or shaking around in their housing. If this noise isn’t caught early enough, these parts may come fully free and create added damage to your unit.
  4. Clanging: Did you notice a rattling noise earlier this month that stopped but was traded for a clanging or clattering sound? If so, it means that the parts that were once just loose are now fully free and bouncing around inside your system. This can lead to additional broken parts and other damage if it isn’t fixed early enough.
  5. Screeching: Last but not least, we have the screeching or “screaming” noise. This one is hard to ignore because of its abrasiveness and that is a good thing–you shouldn’t ignore it! This sound may be caused by loose fan blades scraping around inside their house. It might also be an indicator of a blower motor belt that needs to be replaced. In either case, the sooner you get this noise identified and addressed, the better.
